Overview of Core Knowledge Preschool Institute Trainings and Why It Is Important To Plan Time To Attend Each One

Learn why it is essential to go beyond the "Content and Skills Guidelines for Preschool" Handbook to become an excellent Core Knowledge teacher.  An experienced teacher and administrator will explain her experience budgeting and planning time to attend all of the preschool institutes, including leadership training for school directors, over a five year timeframe.  Review a typical day in a fully-implemented Core Knowledge preschool classroom, hear highlights of each training, and learn ways to share what you have learned with co-workers when you return from training.  This session will give you an opportunity to hear answer to questions preschool teachers have about implementing the Core Knowledge curriculum.

Introduction to Core Knowledge (K-8)

Core Knowledge is an idea that schools need a solid, specific, shared core curriculum.  It is also a Guide to Specific, Shared Content as outlined in the Core Knowledge Preschool Sequence and the Core Knowledge Sequence (K–8).  It is also a School Reform Movement in hundreds of schools dedicated to academic excellence, greater fairness, and higher literacy. Tim Quiroz, a Core Knowledge Consultant and California teacher, will provide an overview of these three dimensions of Core Knowledge.

Curriculum That Compliments Core Knowledge

Core Knowledge is a curriculum sequence, a detailed outline of specific content to be taught at each grade level.  Many Core Knowledge schools use an articulated program such as Saxon Math to implement the Core Knowledge math content.  Other programs, such as Junior Great Books, compliment the Core Knowledge sequence.  This session will review why schools select these curricula and how they both enhance and contribute to the Core Knowledge Sequence and high academic achievement.

Core Knowledge Focused Music Docent Program

The Core Knowledge music curriculum is rich and exciting.  At the same time, the wealth of information to be covered can be daunting.  Using a docent program can assist teachers in the delivery of the curriculum as well as utilize a valuable resource – VOLUNTEERS!  This session will provide a brief overview of Rocklin Academy’s docent program, and will include a hands-on demonstration of some of our favorite lesson plans.

Fun and Innovative Ways to Extend Core Knowledge Preschool Literature Selections into Art, Math and Science Activities to Reinforce Core Knowledge Concepts and Skills

A literature selection is more enjoyable when children get the opportunity to create a product and/or experience a science or math lesson that increases their comprehension of the storyline to "retell" at home.  Participants will learn how to "bring stories to life" with activities created by actual Core Knowledge teachers.  There will be an opportunity to share with others in the audience, fun things that you have created using Core Knowledge preschool storybook selections.

Music, Movement, and Me

The preschool years are an exciting time of growth and self-discovery.  Music can assist students in expressing emotions, solving problems, and increasing their sense of control over themselves and their bodies.  In this session, participants will learn some of the fundamental elements of a movement activity and how to teach a song so that any three- or four-year-old can sing it at the end of singing time.  In addition, favorite songs and lesson plans will be used as connections to the Core Knowledge curriculum.

Experienced Teachers + New to Core Knowledge = ?

Four experienced teachers came together last year for the first time at a Core Knowledge school.  These teachers will share what they learned over the course of the last year as “new” Core Knowledge teachers at Rocklin Academy.  Through a panel discussion and lots of audience interaction, these teachers will share what was easy, what was hard, their biggest surprises, their biggest joys, and how their prior experienced helped them.  All teachers who are new to Core Knowledge are encouraged to attend, as well as any teachers who joined a Core Knowledge school and wants to share their experiences.

Learning Style Preferences in First Graders and Their Ability to Learn Phonics

Core Knowledge focuses on vocabulary development across all the content areas.  Reading is vital to a first grader’s success.  Experts agree that one of the most effective ways to engage a student in reading is to meet their sensory style needs, and that engaged learning may look different for each style.  The Presenter’s research demonstrates how utilizing simple exercises and activities, tailored to match a student’s learning style, will help students improve their reading and phonics skills.
